Introducing PARES-MH: A New Chapter in Patient-Oriented Mental Health Research

What's in a Name?

They say, "a rose by any other name would smell as sweet," but when it comes to co-research in the mental health sector, a name can set the stage for the level of engagement, responsibility, and equality between professionals and patient research partners. That's why we've coined the term PARES-MH, which stands for PAtient RESearch Partners in Mental Health. But beyond this convenient acronym lies a world of philosophy, values, and methods.

"Not everybody can be famous but everybody can be great, because greatness is determined by service."
— Martin Luther King Jr.

Primus Inter Pares: First Among Equals

Embedded in the core philosophy of PARES-MH is the Latin concept of "Primus inter pares," or "first among equals." This phrase beautifully encapsulates the idea that while there may be a nominal “leader” in a research initiative, all individuals—researchers and PARES-MH alike—stand on equal ground. It's a guiding principle that informs the structure and spirit of our collaborations.

What Does PARES-MH Even Mean?

The name is an acronym but also plays on the Latin word "pares," meaning "equals." (Pronounced as "PAH-rays). This captures the essence of the equal, reciprocal relationship we aim to foster between researchers and young adults who have lived experience with mood and anxiety disorders. In the realm of mental health (or any research for that matter), this is not just groundbreaking; it's necessary.

Equality at its Core

One of the key principles behind PARES-MH is the equal footing on which all participants stand. Be it a seasoned academic researcher or a young adult with lived experience in mental health, we all have different skills, strengths, knoweldge and wisdom and what each person brings is equally valuable.

The 'MH' Matters Too

The "MH" in PARES-MH stands for Mental Health, an area that critically needs the lens of lived experience. These aren't abstract numbers or detached case studies; they are real stories from real lives, and they will impact real lives, too. That’s why we need to do more then add a seat to “our table” - we are building a new table, together, where everyone has their own spot.

PARES-MH: More Than Just a Title

Flexibility and Autonomy

The PARES-MH approach allows co-researchers to co-design their roles. From designing the sampling frame and qualitative interview guide to interpreting data, our co-researchers have the freedom to be involved in various aspects as much or as little as they choose.

Caring for Wellness and Personal Growth

Remember, our first and foremost focus is on the well-being of our patient research partners. We are committed to fostering an environment that not only contributes to the betterment of mental health research but also caters to personal growth, career progression, and above all, wellness and rest.

Learning and Adaptability

Being a part of PARES-MH means being a lifelong learner. It's not just about what the research can gain from you but also what you can gain from the research. Whether you're here for the knowledge, looking to boost your CV, or in it for the sheer altruism, there's a place for you here.

Patient-Oriented Research Reimagined.

PARES-MH is not merely a nifty acronym; it is a shift in how we perceive, conduct, and evaluate mental health research. Through the guiding principle of "Primus inter pares," we move towards a more compassionate, equitable, and just model of research partnership. PARES-MH serves as a banner under which we can all find shelter, irrespective of our academic qualifications or lived experiences. Because in the end, we are all pares—equals—in the quest for better mental health care.
