The Dharma Sessions: Therapy should be a right and not a privilege.
As a person raised and continuing in the Hindu tradition and a deeply spiritual person, my aspirations as a Psychotherapist transcend the sole transactional exchange of therapy for money. Until psychotherapy is universally covered, my practice is fee-for-service; however, I do not believe that finances should ever be a barrier to care. Guided by the Hindu principles of dharma and karma, I aim to provide access to care regardless of your financial/economic situation. If this is your case, perhaps a Dharma Session is for you.
Dharma Sessions: Healing as Duty
1-Hour Virtual Session: Aligned with my commitment to accessible care, I offer a personalized 1-hour virtual therapy session. Post-session, we'll collaboratively explore what the next steps could be.
Cost of a Dharma Session: The Pay It Forward Model—Living My Karma
The Dharma Sessions adopt a 'pay it forward' or 'pay what you can' model. This means committing to an act of kindness or creativity that positively impacts another's life. Such acts, whether creating art or a simple gesture of goodwill, become a meaningful part of the positive karma cycle. Engaging in this cycle of giving not only benefits others but enriches your life, fostering mutual healing and a community of care.
Beyond Charity: Embracing Solidarity
The Dharma Sessions are not about charity; they're about fostering a network of mutual support and solidarity. We're cultivating a community where every contribution, regardless of its form, has value, worth and meaning, and you are a valuable part of the collective healing journey.
Why Do I Offer Dharma Sessions?
The Bhagavad Gita, a revered 700-verse Hindu scripture within the epic Mahabharata, delves deeply into the concepts of dharma (duty/righteousness) and karma (action/deed). These ancient principles are not mere philosophical ideas but practical guidelines for living a meaningful life. Here are some pivotal passages:
Dharma: Your Righteous Path
Chapter 2, Verse 31: "Considering your dharma, you should not waver. For a Kshatriya, nothing is better than a war against evil."
Interpretation: Addressed to Arjuna, the warrior prince, this verse underscores the critical nature of embracing one's duty. It articulates that fulfilling one's inherent responsibilities is paramount, especially when facing complex moral challenges.
Chapter 3, Verse 35: "It is far better to perform one's own dharma imperfectly than to master the dharma of another. By performing the duties prescribed by one's own nature, one incurs no sin."
Interpretation: This passage illuminates the importance of authenticity in one's path. It emphasizes that embracing and executing one's unique duties, even imperfectly, is preferable to perfectly performing someone else's duties.
Karma: The Law of Action
Chapter 2, Verse 47: "You have the right to perform your prescribed duties, but you are not entitled to the fruits of your actions. Never consider yourself the cause of the results of your activities, and never be attached to not doing your duty."
Interpretation: This seminal verse teaches the principle of "Nishkama Karma" or selfless action. It advises us to engage in our duties without attachment to outcomes, focusing instead on the integrity of the action itself.
Chapter 2, Verse 50: "A person who is adept in the science of division and detachment and who is free from attachment to the results of work attains the supreme goal of life."
Interpretation: Highlighting the art of detached action, this verse suggests that true wisdom lies in performing one's duties with equanimity and without attachment to the results, leading to ultimate liberation and peace.
Dharma, for me, is a commitment to a righteous path, a moral order, and an ethical way of living. It's my responsibility to myself, society, and the universe. The title of Psychotherapist may be a career, but the work we do for healing is a vocation; it's the core of my existence. It drives me to provide healing and understanding in whatever work I am doing—whether I am conducting research, doing consulting work or teaching, eliminating barriers to wellness, and always serving in the best capacity I can. Living my dharma means dedicating my life to the service of others, ensuring that my actions contribute to collective well-being.
